Zemplén Hungarian style Barrels are manufactured exclusively from the world’s best oak wood, the Quercus Petraea/Sessile.
The oak trees in the Zemplén Mountains grow slower in the volcanic soil and smaller, creating fine grain which sequentially lends itself to a very delicate extraction.
The hemicellulose in Eastern European oak breaks down much more easily, and conveys an exceptional selection of toasted, vanilla, sugary, woody, spicy and caramel-like flavors.
Many winemakers prefer the softer, smoother, creamier texture Hungarian oak offers their wines.
French winemakers used mostly Hungarian oak barrels until the middle of the XX. century, then – because of the supply cut – the French wine industry was forced to find its own oak source.
However, after the fall of the “Iron Curtain”, the cooperages from France, again became major consumers of the unique Quercus Petraea/Sessile Hungarian Oak trees, originated in the Zemplén Mountain Forest.

Harford Recooped French Oak Barrels
10, 15, 20, 30 and 60 Gallon Barrels
Compromise in cost but not quality!
Solution: to make small barrels from refurbished material. These barrels are made from 100% French Oak barrels. Once the barrel is recooped, the staves are resized and the heads remade to fit the particular barrel you want.
This process starts with a neutral barrel. Then 1/4 inch of the stave and head are removed to get down to virgin wood.
This patented 18 year old technology removes the wood “with the grain” never compromising the benefits afforded by the oak. Once all the neutral oak material is removed, the barrels are cured in a controlled environment to ensure wood moisture content to be less than 13% and complete volatilization of all ethanol and wine essence occurs. Next, the barrels are toasted and raised. Then the barrels are oak fire toasted for either a medium minus, medium, medium plus or heavy toast. You tell us what you would like. Prior to shipment, barrels receive a thorough test and complete inspection to make sure there are no defects.
